CHAPTER 4: THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE
The mansion plunged into darkness.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The security alarms screamed through the halls.
Glass shattered somewhere downstairs.
And then came the sound of footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
Getting closer.
Victoria's heart slammed against her ribs.
Eleanor had gone pale.
Not startled.
Not confused.
Terrified.
The reaction told Victoria everything.
Whoever was coming—
Eleanor already knew them.
"Who is it?" Victoria demanded.
Eleanor didn't answer.
Another crash echoed through the mansion.
Arthur grabbed Victoria's arm.
"We need to leave."
But Eleanor suddenly shouted:
"No!"
Everyone froze.
The old woman backed away from the windows.
Shaking.
"He found us."
Arthur stared.
"Who?"
Eleanor's voice cracked.
"Him."
For the first time in her life, Victoria saw genuine fear in Eleanor Rosewood.
The woman who had manipulated boardrooms.
Controlled fortunes.
Destroyed reputations.
Now looked like a prisoner reliving an old nightmare.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
Dim red illumination filled the room.
And in that crimson glow, Eleanor looked twenty years older.
Victoria stepped forward.
"You said Isabella is alive."
Eleanor nodded.
Barely.
"Then where is she?"
Before Eleanor could answer—
A gunshot exploded downstairs.
Arthur flinched.
Victoria's blood turned cold.
Someone screamed.
Then silence.
The mansion's head of security appeared in the doorway.
Breathing hard.
Face pale.
"They're inside."
"How many?" Arthur asked.
"Five. Maybe six."
Victoria looked at Eleanor.
"They're here for Emma."
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Yes."
The answer felt like ice.
Victoria's mind raced.
Emma was hidden in a safe apartment under police protection.
Only a handful of people knew where.
Yet somehow these men were still searching.
Still hunting.
After all these years.
"Who are they?" Victoria asked.
Eleanor looked directly at her.
Then spoke a name Victoria had never heard.
"Gabriel Kane."
The room fell silent.
Arthur frowned.
"I thought he was dead."
"So did everyone else."
Victoria stared between them.
"Who is Gabriel Kane?"
Neither answered immediately.
And that hesitation frightened her more than anything.
Finally Arthur spoke.
"Twenty-three years ago, Gabriel Kane ran the largest money laundering network on the East Coast."
Victoria's stomach tightened.
"He worked with Jonathan."
Eleanor nodded.
"Your uncle borrowed money from Kane."
The pieces began connecting.
Jonathan's debts.
Isabella discovering the truth.
Her disappearance.
Emma.
The ring.
Everything.
Arthur continued.
"When Isabella found evidence linking Jonathan and Kane, she threatened to go to federal authorities."
Victoria's pulse quickened.
"What happened?"
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
"What happened?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Everything."
The old woman sat heavily in a chair.
As though carrying a burden she could no longer hold.
Then, finally—
She told the truth.
Twenty-three years earlier.
Isabella Rosewood had discovered financial records proving Jonathan was helping Gabriel Kane hide millions through Rosewood companies.
When Isabella threatened exposure, Jonathan panicked.
But he wasn't the most dangerous man involved.
Gabriel Kane was.
The crime boss ordered Isabella eliminated.
Not silenced.
Not threatened.
Eliminated.
Victoria felt sick.
"What stopped him?"
Eleanor looked away.
"I did."
Silence.
Arthur stared.
Victoria blinked.
"You?"
Eleanor nodded.
For the first time, tears spilled down her cheeks.
"I helped her escape."
The confession hung in the air.
Twenty-three years.
Twenty-three years of lies.
And now the truth emerged piece by piece.
Eleanor explained how she secretly warned Isabella.
How she arranged false documents.
How she helped her disappear before Kane's men could find her.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Arthur asked.
Eleanor's voice broke.
"Because Kane promised he would kill everyone if I did."
The room fell silent again.
Victoria struggled to process it.
Eleanor wasn't innocent.
Far from it.
She had lied.
Hidden evidence.
Protected dangerous secrets.
But she had also saved Isabella's life.
And perhaps Emma's.
Then another voice interrupted.
A voice coming from the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
Deadly.
"You should have stayed silent, Eleanor."
Everyone froze.
A man stood in the doorway.
Gray hair.
Black suit.
Cold eyes.
Older than Victoria expected.
But unmistakably dangerous.
Gabriel Kane.
Even at seventy, he carried himself like someone accustomed to fear.
Behind him stood four armed men.
Victoria's blood ran cold.
Kane smiled.
"Family reunions are always emotional."
Arthur stepped forward.
"You should be in prison."
Kane chuckled.
"I should be many things."
His eyes shifted toward Eleanor.
"Unfortunately, loyalty isn't one of them."
Eleanor trembled.
"You promised."
Kane laughed.
"People like me don't survive by keeping promises."
Victoria's heart pounded.
Then Kane looked directly at her.
"You're Victoria."
It wasn't a question.
"You look like your sister."
The words hit like a slap.
Victoria forced herself to stand tall.
"Where is Isabella?"
Something changed in Kane's expression.
Almost amusement.
Then—
To Victoria's shock—
He smiled.
"Alive."
Arthur gasped.
Victoria felt her knees weaken.
The word echoed inside her head.
Alive.
Alive.
Alive.
After twenty-three years.
Alive.
"Where?" she whispered.
Kane tilted his head.
"Still trying to save everyone."
Victoria stepped forward.
"Take me to her."
Kane laughed.
The sound was horrible.
"You think this is a fairy tale?"
Then his smile vanished.
Instantly.
"Your sister has something that belongs to me."
Victoria understood immediately.
"The evidence."
Kane nodded.
Even after twenty-three years.
Even after empires rose and fell.
He still feared whatever Isabella possessed.
Records.
Names.
Accounts.
Proof.
Enough proof to destroy him forever.
Then Kane spoke words that changed everything.
"She contacted me three weeks ago."
Victoria froze.
Arthur froze.
Even Eleanor looked stunned.
"What?" Victoria whispered.
Kane's eyes narrowed.
"She offered a trade."
The room seemed to tilt.
"A trade for what?"
Kane's expression darkened.
"For Emma."
Victoria stopped breathing.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Emma wasn't merely hiding.
She wasn't merely running.
Someone had found her.
And Isabella had sacrificed herself to protect her daughter.
The realization shattered Victoria.
Because she knew exactly what kind of woman Isabella had always been.
The kind who would trade her own freedom for someone she loved.
Kane looked toward the window.
Toward the storm raging outside.
Then he spoke quietly.
"Your sister surrendered herself to save the child."
Victoria felt tears burn behind her eyes.
No.
No.
Not again.
Not after all this time.
Not when they were finally close.
"Where is she?" Victoria demanded.
Kane smiled.
But before he could answer—
A deafening explosion rocked the mansion.
The walls shook.
Windows shattered.
Everyone ducked.
Smoke filled the room.
And suddenly gunfire erupted from outside.
Not Kane's men.
Someone else's.
Rapid.
Precise.
Professional.
Kane spun toward the window.
For the first time—
He looked surprised.
Then a voice shouted from the darkness outside.
A woman's voice.
Strong.
Familiar.
And impossible.
"Victoria!"
Victoria's heart stopped.
Because she recognized that voice.
Even after twenty-three years.
Even after believing she might never hear it again.
There was no mistaking it.
Isabella Rosewood had come back.
