CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

"Dad—he's not just leaving me. He's trying to take everything."

Frank Bennett gripped the steering wheel tighter.

Snow hammered against the windshield while his daughter cried out in pain from the passenger seat.

"Hold on, sweetheart."

Emily's breathing became uneven.

Another contraction hit.

Harder this time.

She squeezed her father's hand so tightly his fingers went numb.

"He took the account," she gasped.

"What account?"

"The trust account Grandma left me."

Frank's eyes widened.

"What?"

Emily fought through the pain.

"My grandmother's inheritance."

Years earlier, Emily's grandmother had secretly left her nearly two million dollars.

The money was protected in a family trust.

Or so Emily believed.

Ryan had spent years convincing her to give him access to help "manage investments."

Now she knew the truth.

He had been moving money.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Quietly.

And when she confronted him, he panicked.

The cheating was only part of it.

The missing money was the real reason he abandoned her.

Ryan wasn't trying to save his reputation.

He was trying to escape before she discovered everything.

Twenty minutes later they reached Mercy Regional Hospital.

Doctors rushed Emily into labor and delivery.

Frank remained outside pacing.

Hours passed.

The longest hours of his life.

Then finally a nurse emerged smiling.

"Congratulations."

Frank nearly collapsed from relief.

"A healthy baby girl."

Tears filled his eyes instantly.

For the first time that night, hope appeared.

But Emily's battle was far from over.

The next morning Ryan arrived.

Not with flowers.

Not with apologies.

With papers.

Divorce papers.

Emily stared at them from her hospital bed.

Their newborn daughter slept beside her.

Ryan never even looked at the baby.

Instead he slid the documents across the tray table.

"Sign these."

Frank stepped forward.

"You've got some nerve."

Ryan ignored him.

"If we handle this quietly, things stay simple."

Emily slowly looked up.

For the first time she noticed something.

Ryan wasn't confident.

He was scared.

And scared people make mistakes.

"What are you hiding?" she asked.

His jaw tightened.

For one brief second she had her answer.

Everything.

He was hiding everything.

And Emily silently made a promise.

Not revenge.

Justice.

She would uncover every lie.

No matter how long it took.
