CHAPTER 1: THE TEDDY BEAR THAT TALKED

I did not sleep that night.

The teddy bear sat sealed inside a clear evidence bag on my kitchen table.

Every time I looked at it, I imagined Mia hugging it.

Taking it to bed.

Carrying it to school.

Telling secrets into its fuzzy ears.

The thought made me sick.

At six o'clock the next morning, before Mia woke up, I called someone I trusted.

Detective Rachel Monroe.

We had known each other since college.

Rachel listened without interrupting.

Then she said three words.

"Don't touch anything."

An hour later she was standing in my kitchen.

The bear lay between us.

Rachel carefully examined the device hidden inside.

Her expression changed immediately.

"This isn't homemade."

My stomach tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"It means somebody spent money."

She pointed toward the tiny circuit board.

"Commercial-grade GPS."

Then she pointed toward another component.

"And audio recording capability."

I felt cold.

"They were listening?"

"Potentially."

Rachel paused.

"How old is your daughter?"

"Six."

The silence that followed was unbearable.

The device was sent for forensic examination.

By afternoon Rachel called.

The results were worse than expected.

The tracker had been active.

Very active.

Data logs showed transmission history.

Someone had been receiving location updates.

Someone had intended to monitor Mia continuously.

And then came the part that made Rachel's voice harden.

"The device was registered under a shell account."

"Can they trace it?"

"We already did."

I held my breath.

The account connected to a technology consulting company.

One recently hired by Adam.

My ex-husband.

That evening Adam called.

His voice sounded cheerful.

Fake cheerful.

"Did Mia like the bear?"

I stared at my phone.

For a long moment I said nothing.

Then I answered carefully.

"She loved it."

"Good."

Too fast.

Too relieved.

The reaction told me everything.

He expected me to have found nothing.

Expected me to stay blind.

Expected me to stay quiet.

Instead, I smiled into the silence.

Because for the first time, Adam didn't realize he was the one being watched.

And Rachel was already building a case.
