Chapter 1: The Gilded Facade of Rosewood Manor

The afternoon sun beat down relentlessly over the pristine lawns of Rosewood Manor, a sweeping stone estate that stood as a monument to multi-generational wealth. Every hedge was trimmed to mathematical perfection; every rose bush bloomed in calculated alignment. To the outside world, the Sterling family lived an idyllic life of absolute luxury. But behind the towering wrought-iron gates, the atmosphere was thick with a toxic blend of vanity, perfectionism, and deep-seated cruelty.

Victoria Sterling stood near the edge of the stone courtyard, her hands trembling not with fear, but with a volatile, untamed fury. She was a striking woman in her late 30s, her blonde hair coiffed into an impeccable updo that didn't have a single strand out of place. For the evening's upcoming charity gala, she had adorned herself in a stunning, form-fitting crimson red satin evening gown that cascaded gracefully to her high heels. A delicate gold necklace caught the sunlight, mirroring the sharp, dangerous glint in her eyes. To Victoria, image was everything. She had spent a decade crafting the illusion of a perfect, elite life, and she guarded that illusion with a predatory intensity.

"Get off my property!" Victoria’s voice pierced through the tranquil afternoon air, sharp and freezing, completely devoid of any human empathy.

Standing a few feet away from her on the wet stone walkway was Evelyn, her elderly grandmother. Evelyn was a ghost of the vibrant woman she had once been. In her late 80s, her frail body was hunched over, her thin white hair a tangled, chaotic mess around her weathered face. She was completely barefoot, her wrinkled feet stepping awkwardly on the hard stones. She wore nothing but a faded, light blue patterned short-sleeve shirt and a white medical adult diaper. Evelyn’s wide, hazel eyes darted around in absolute terror, utterly disconnected from reality. The progression of her advanced dementia had stripped away her memories, leaving her permanently stranded in a confusing, frightening world where she no longer recognized her surroundings—or her own family.

In a display of monstrous impatience, Victoria gripped a heavy black rubber garden hose lying near the flower bed. Her fingers, decorated with meticulously manicured nails and a sparkling diamond ring, locked around the yellow-and-black high-pressure spray nozzle. Without a moment of hesitation, she squeezed the trigger.

A harsh, violent stream of water blasted from the nozzle, striking Evelyn squarely in the chest.

Evelyn let out a high-pitched gasp of pure terror, her small body jerking backward from the sudden, icy impact. The water instantly soaked through her thin shirt, clinging to her fragile skin as she struggled to maintain her balance on the slippery stones. She raised her hands instinctively, her fingers clawing at the empty air as if trying to ward off an invisible monster. To Evelyn, the freezing water wasn't just an inconvenience; it was a physical assault that triggered a primal, fight-or-flight panic inside her fractured mind.

Victoria didn't flinch. If anything, her grip on the hose tightened. Her jaw remained clenched into a cruel, unyielding mask as she adjusted her posture to keep the high-pressure stream focused directly on the shivering, helpless old woman. In Victoria’s mind, Evelyn’s state was an embarrassment—a visible blemish on the pristine canvas of the Sterling estate that needed to be washed away before the wealthy guests arrived.

From the service entrance of the manor, a young brunette woman named Maria came running out. Maria was in her mid-20s, dressed in a traditional dark navy blue and white maid uniform with a starched white apron. She had worked for the Sterlings for less than a year, but she had quickly grown deeply attached to Evelyn, often spending her breaks listening to the elderly woman’s fragmented, nonsensical stories about the past. Seeing the cruelty unfolding on the lawn, Maria broke protocol entirely.

She sprinted directly into the freezing spray of water, her sensible black shoes splashing across the wet stones. She threw her arms around Evelyn’s frail shoulders, using her own body as a human shield to deflect the harsh stream of water.

"Stop it! Please, stop it!" Maria cried out, her voice cracking with a mixture of panic, desperation, and utter disgust. She pulled Evelyn tightly against her side, feeling the old woman’s intense shivering beneath her palms. "She has dementia! She doesn't know what she's doing!"

Victoria finally released the trigger, the violent stream of water collapsing into a pathetic trickle on the grass. She glared at Maria, her eyes narrowing into cold, dangerous slits. "Mind your place, girl. This senile old woman wandered out into the courtyard right where the caterers are setting up. If any of our guests see her like this, it will ruin everything I’ve built. Take her back to the basement quarters where she belongs."

Maria held Evelyn closer, her heart breaking as the elderly woman babbled incoherently, her lips blue from the cold water, completely unaware of why she was being punished.
