Chapter 1: One Click
The match flared to life between Evan's fingers.
For a second, the tiny flame looked harmless.
Then he tossed it through the shattered passenger window.
Gasoline exploded into orange light.
Heat rushed across the cabin.
Smoke thickened instantly.
Behind Evan, Ramos barked orders in Spanish while two cartel men dragged the damaged briefcase from the wrecked van.
Nobody was looking at me.
Nobody except the baby.
A sharp kick rolled through my stomach.
Alive.
Still alive.
My daughter was still fighting.
So was I.
The key fob dug into my broken palm.
Months earlier, Evan had laughed when he showed me his newest investment.
A luxury logistics company.
Private warehouses.
Armored storage facilities.
Encrypted security systems.
He loved bragging.
Loved hearing himself sound important.
What he never realized was that I listened.
Every password.
Every location.
Every backup protocol.
Every emergency override.
Especially the emergency override.
Because Evan never believed anyone around him was intelligent enough to matter.
Including his wife.
The flames climbed higher.
Plastic melted.
The windshield cracked with a sharp pop.
I closed my fingers around the fob.
One click.
Nothing happened.
At least nothing visible.
But eighty miles away, inside three heavily guarded warehouses, every security door slammed shut automatically.
Every vault sealed.
Every remote account froze.
Every digital ledger uploaded itself to a secure federal server.
Every hidden transaction copied itself into evidence files.
The entire criminal network Evan had spent years building had just locked itself inside a cage.
And he had no idea.
Yet.
Ramos' phone rang.
The cartel lieutenant frowned.
Answered.
Listened.
Then his face changed.
"What do you mean locked?"
Evan turned.
"What?"
Ramos listened again.
His eyes narrowed.
"All three sites?"
The men exchanged nervous looks.
Evan stepped closer.
"What happened?"
Ramos grabbed him by the shirt.
"Tell me why every warehouse is sealed."
My husband went pale.
The first crack in his confidence appeared.
"It's impossible."
Ramos shoved him backward.
"Nothing is impossible."
Another phone rang.
Then another.
Then another.
The men began shouting over one another.
Lost shipments.
Frozen accounts.
Locked vaults.
Security failures.
Millions of dollars trapped.
Evan looked around wildly.
Trying to understand.
Trying to find someone else to blame.
Then his eyes landed on me.
And saw my hand.
The hand clutching the fob.
His expression changed instantly.
"You."
I smiled through blood.
"Hello, husband."
The realization hit him like a truck.
He lunged toward the SUV.
Too late.
Red dots appeared across his chest.
Then another.
And another.
Laser sights.
At least twelve.
Maybe more.
Every cartel gunman froze.
Silence swallowed the overpass.
A voice boomed from somewhere above.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Nobody moved.
The lasers multiplied.
Ramos slowly raised his hands.
One by one, the others followed.
Only Evan remained frozen.
Staring at me.
"You planned this?"
His voice sounded broken.
I laughed.
Or maybe coughed.
It was hard to tell.
"No."
I looked down at my stomach.
"I survived you."
Sirens exploded from every direction.
The empire was falling.
And it had started with a single click.
Then the driver's door ripped open.
A tactical medic appeared.
His eyes moved from my injuries to my swollen stomach.
Everything about him changed.
"Pregnant female!"
More agents rushed forward.
The medic grabbed my hand.
"Stay with me."
I looked past him.
Evan was on his knees now.
Surrounded.
Handcuffed.
Finished.
For the first time in years, I wasn't afraid of him.
For the first time in years, he was afraid of me.
Then darkness swallowed everything.
