Chapter 1: The Maid They Tried to Silence
The atmosphere inside the Ashford mansion was so tense that even the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed reluctant to tick.
Margaret Ashford paced furiously across the living room.
Her high heels struck the marble floor with sharp, angry clicks.
Back and forth.
Back and forth.
Like a predator preparing to attack.
Standing quietly near the doorway was Sofia Martinez, the family's longtime maid.
Her hands were folded neatly in front of her.
Her eyes remained lowered.
Yet despite her calm appearance, her heart was racing.
She already knew what was coming.
Margaret had been searching for an excuse to remove her for months.
And today she had finally found one.
At least, she thought she had.
"You've crossed the line this time."
Margaret's voice sliced through the room.
"Pack your things."
Sofia remained silent.
"Did you hear me?"
Still nothing.
Margaret smiled triumphantly.
"I said you're fired."
The words echoed through the room.
Several servants standing nearby exchanged nervous glances.
Nobody dared intervene.
After all, Margaret Ashford was the lady of the house.
Or at least she desperately wanted everyone to believe she was.
The maid slowly nodded.
"If that is Mr. Ashford's decision, I will leave."
Margaret laughed.
"Oh, don't worry."
"It will be."
Just then, the front door opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
Daniel Ashford.
Owner of the estate.
Founder of a billion-dollar investment company.
And father of eight-year-old Emma Ashford.
The moment he entered, everyone fell silent.
Daniel immediately sensed something was wrong.
His sharp eyes moved from Margaret to Sofia.
Then to the nervous staff.
"What happened?"
Margaret wasted no time.
"Sofia is no longer employed here."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
Margaret crossed her arms dramatically.
"Because she has become completely inappropriate."
Sofia looked up.
Confused.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"Inappropriate?"
Margaret nodded eagerly.
"She interferes with family matters."
"She ignores my instructions."
"She spends too much time with Emma."
The last sentence seemed oddly specific.
Daniel noticed.
"So your issue is that she spends time with my daughter?"
Margaret opened her mouth.
But before she could answer—
A small voice interrupted.
"No!"
Everyone turned.
Little Emma came running into the room.
Tears streamed down her face.
Her blonde hair was messy.
Her tiny hands trembled.
"Daddy!"
Daniel immediately knelt.
"Emma?"
The little girl threw herself into his arms.
Sobbing uncontrollably.
Margaret visibly tensed.
"Sweetheart—"
"No!"
Emma cried.
The room fell silent.
Even Margaret looked shocked.
The child clung tightly to her father.
As though afraid someone might pull her away.
Then came the confession.
The confession that changed everything.
"Don't make Sofia leave."
Daniel gently wiped away her tears.
"Why not?"
Emma's voice broke.
"Because she's the only one who takes care of me."
The room froze.
Margaret's face instantly lost color.
Emma continued crying.
"She's the only one who reads to me."
"The only one who helps me when I'm sick."
"The only one who eats dinner with me when I'm alone."
Daniel slowly looked up.
His expression changed.
Margaret immediately became nervous.
"Daniel, she's just a child—"
But Emma wasn't finished.
"The only one who hugs me."
The words landed like a bomb.
Silence filled the mansion.
A terrible silence.
The kind that forces uncomfortable truths into the open.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
"Emma..."
The little girl sniffled.
"Sometimes I wait all day for someone to talk to me."
Margaret's mouth fell open.
Several servants lowered their heads.
They knew.
They had all seen it.
Daniel traveled frequently for work.
And whenever he was gone, Margaret rarely spent time with Emma.
The child often ate alone.
Played alone.
Cried alone.
Everyone knew.
No one said anything.
Until now.
Daniel slowly stood.
His expression remained perfectly calm.
Which was far more frightening than anger.
Margaret swallowed nervously.
"Daniel, she's exaggerating."
Nobody believed that.
Especially not Daniel.
He turned toward the staff.
"Mrs. Harper."
An elderly housekeeper stepped forward.
"Yes, sir."
"Is Emma telling the truth?"
Margaret immediately interrupted.
"This is ridiculous—"
Daniel raised one hand.
The room became silent again.
Mrs. Harper hesitated.
Then finally nodded.
"Yes, sir."
Margaret went pale.
Another servant stepped forward.
"And Sofia has cared for Miss Emma every day."
A third servant nodded.
"She often stays awake all night when Emma is sick."
A fourth added:
"She even uses her own salary to buy books and toys."
Daniel slowly looked toward Sofia.
The maid immediately lowered her gaze.
Embarrassed.
She clearly never expected any of this to become public.
The billionaire businessman stood motionless for several seconds.
Then something unexpected happened.
Something nobody anticipated.
Including Margaret.
Daniel started laughing.
Not a polite laugh.
Not a nervous laugh.
A genuine laugh.
The kind that appears when someone finally understands a situation perfectly.
Margaret blinked.
Confused.
"What is funny?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
Then pointed toward Sofia.
"You want to fire the only person in this house who actually takes care of my daughter?"
Several servants nearly laughed.
Margaret looked horrified.
Daniel continued.
"The employee you're complaining about is literally doing your job."
A few servants had to turn away to hide their smiles.
Margaret's face turned bright red.
The humiliation was immediate.
Complete.
And absolutely unavoidable.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
He walked toward Sofia.
The maid looked terrified.
"Sir, I never meant to—"
Daniel interrupted.
"How long have you worked here?"
"Six years."
"And you've cared for Emma all six years?"
"Yes."
Daniel nodded.
Then shocked everyone.
Including Sofia.
"You're promoted."
Silence.
"What?"
Margaret practically shouted.
Daniel ignored her.
"Sofia Martinez, effective immediately, your salary is doubled."
The servants stared.
Emma's eyes widened.
Sofia looked completely speechless.
Daniel continued.
"You'll become Emma's official guardian supervisor whenever I'm away."
Margaret nearly exploded.
"This is insane!"
Daniel slowly turned.
"No."
His voice was ice cold.
"This is gratitude."
The difference between the two was impossible to miss.
For the first time since entering the room, Daniel wasn't smiling.
And Margaret suddenly realized something terrifying.
She had made a serious mistake.
That night, after everyone retired to their rooms, Sofia sat quietly in the servant quarters.
She should have felt relieved.
Happy.
Safe.
Instead she felt uneasy.
Because she knew something nobody else knew.
Something she had hidden for years.
A secret connected to Emma.
A secret connected to Daniel's late wife.
A secret powerful enough to destroy the Ashford family.
Suddenly a knock sounded at her door.
Three slow knocks.
Sofia froze.
Nobody visited servants this late.
Carefully she opened the door.
No one stood outside.
Only a small envelope resting on the floor.
Her blood ran cold.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
Impossible.
No.
It couldn't be.
The sender had supposedly died seven years ago.
With trembling fingers she opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Only one sentence had been written:
"They know the truth about Emma."
Sofia's face turned white.
The letter slipped from her fingers.
Because if the message was real...
Everything was about to change.
And the danger threatening the Ashford family had only just begun.
